The first Mistborn trilogy—three years later
I am no literary critic—just an avid reader who only sticks with stories that truly grab my interest. To be honest, the pile of books I’ve DNF’d (did not finish) because they couldn't hold my attention is almost embarrassing.
Mistborn was not one of them.
The first time I read the Mistborn trilogy was three years ago, back in 2023. At the time, I was perpetually sleep-deprived, navigating life with a screaming, undiagnosed toddler, working a high-stress job, and doing it all with zero family support nearby. Yet even amidst that chaos, I devoured the third audio drama book in a single day. I was so blown away by the writing and the characters that I didn't stop talking about it until my friends picked it up, too.
Three years later, I finally re-read it. This time, I took my sweet time. I revisited every conversation I hadn't fully digested the first time—so much so that I literally dreamt of Sazed giving me lessons on lost religions, explaining how they all held meaning and what I should learn from them. (That’s a whole separate conversation for my therapist.)
Re-listening to the ending, I felt everything: the courage Elend demanded of his brave warriors as they faced a massive army of Koloss, the desperate hope Sazed held that Vin would save them, and Spook stepping into a confidence no one thought he had.
All this to say: this trilogy is a absolute masterpiece. Brandon Sanderson delivered something truly incredible, and it has me so excited for the upcoming film adaptations. I can’t wait to see how these beautiful, flawed, wonderfully human characters transition to the screen!
